Data
Boot Camp for School Counselors
The Data Boot Camp for School Counselors is designed to advance
technological literacy among counselors in a useful and
practical manner. Particular attention is given to using
Microsoft Excel™ to make data an important part of your
comprehensive school counseling program. From data-driven
decision making, to monitoring progress, to reporting the
positive impact you're having on kids -- this workshop will
demystify how it's done. Workshop content is pre-planned
although flexible enough to meet individuals’ specific
technological training needs. This workshop is conducted in a
computer lab or with laptops so participants can gain valuable
hands-on practice.
Note: Requirements: Laptop (Windows or Macintosh) with Microsoft
Excel.

Psychological First Aid and the Effect on Children
When
disasters strike, there are often unexpected psychological
outcomes. Psychological First Aid (PFA) is a composite of field
tested interventions that can mitigate against these outcomes.
The workshop will be both didactic and interactive and will
cover critical communication skills and strategies for working
with children and their families to recognize and reduce the
negative impact reactions to stress and trauma. Specialized
knowledge will be covered in the areas of Maslow’s Hierarchy of
needs as they relate to crisis response. Participants will learn
effective techniques for strengthening resiliency. They will
also learn to recognize behavioral indicators of people
requiring further mental health support and intervention.
Finally, they will learn how to recognize stress in themselves
and others, and the importance of practicing self-care under
adverse situations.

Practical Approach for Counselors to Set Goals and
Measure Results
Florida
school counselors are required to complete an Individual
Professional Development Plan (IPDP) each year. See how Duval
County has turned this requirement into an excellent means to
report on your school counseling goals and results.
Nan Worsowicz, Supervisor, and Joni Shook, District Level
Counselor, have found a way to “kill two birds with one stone”
by revising the format of the IPDP to address the work of school
counselors.
Participants
will have the opportunity to practice by analyzing data,
developing goals, and creating strategies as a part of this
workshop. Detailed handouts will be provided, including samples
of IPDPs and results reports.

The
Legal and Ethical Complications of Working with Minors in
Schools
The school environment poses competing interests between a
student’s need for confidentiality and the legal rights of
parents as established by the U.S. Supreme Court to be the
guiding voice in their children lives in value-laden issues.
Participants will develop an ethical decision making framework
for analyzing and resolving ethical issues through the
application of ASCA ethical codes, case and statutory law,
school board rules, and community standards. Through small group
and large group discussion of 20 case studies, participants will
be given the opportunity to increase their understanding of the
complexities of respecting a minor’s right to confidentiality,
to develop a sensitivity to the need to consider their actions
in context of each situation for each individual student, and to
understand the rights of parents. Topics of discussion will
include areas such as confidentiality and duty to warn, minors’
rights to privacy, counselors’ responsibilities toward suicidal
children, civil and criminal liability, sexually active minor
clients, birth control, abortion counseling, defamation, child
abuse, case notes and educational records, malpractice in
academic advising, sexual harassment, and personal conduct.

Response
to Intervention and the Professional School Counselor
The purpose of this session will be for participants to increase
their understanding of how Response to Intervention is naturally
aligned with the ASCA National model and the role of the
professional school counselor. The session will address how a
comprehensive school counseling program can be tied to Response
to Intervention. Given that data collection and progress
monitoring are key elements of Response to Intervention, this
session will also detail how systematic data collection through
action research can provide a framework for implementing a
strong universal core at tier 1 and focused problem solving and
interventions for tier 2 and tier 3.
